75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea

Event Start Date: Saturday, 29 April 2017
Event End Date: Sunday, 30 April 2017

The Battle of the Coral Sea is celebrated annually in Cardwell and commemorates an air and naval battle fought between the Japanese Imperial Navy and US and Australian Naval and Air Forces at a critical stage of the Second World War, from 4 - 8 May 1942 . It marked the first defeat of Japanese forces in the war and was the first joint military action between Australian & United States forces.

The 2017 anniversary is a significant celebration with a supper dance planned on 29 April, the evening before the official commemorative event. It is envisaged that the dance will be typical of a dance held during war time with community coming together to enjoy a night of celebration.

A march and commemorative service will be held on Sunday 30 April commencing at 10am at the Coral Sea Memorial Park Cardwell. Refreshments will be provided after the service with a concert in the park planned to follow under the shade of the trees.

It is proposed that the music for the weekend will be provided by the Royal Australian Navy Brass Quintet, however this is yet to be confirmed.
